Walkit.com is a fantastically interesting website for all you lovers of walking. Choose which city you are in, put in the post code where you want to walk from, put in the post code where you want to walk to and let walk it.com select a walking route for you.

They claim it is the most environmentally friendly way of getting around and I guess they’re right, although you might want to leave a little bit more time to get to work in the mornings.

It is a nice and easy website to navigate and will certainly help you to keep fit. Although I've only had a little play on it I have not seen it promoting any of the more scenic routes or shortcuts through parks and rivers, many of which are unknown to the local residents in their area.

On a more social basis, if we all walked more we could team up with some of our neighbours and develop a walking to work club, a bit like the idea of sharing a car to work but where we actually walk and talk.

This of course would have the added benefit of really getting to know your neighbours and making friends in your local area and help the area become more of a community. Something personally I think is lacking in many parts of the UK and certainly in London today.

Get a route map between any two points, including your journey time, calorie burn, step count and carbon saving. It’s quick, free, healthy and green.

Now for the environment part: An average car emits 287g CO2 per mile. According to the Energy Saving Trust, emissions double for short journeys because catalytic converters don’t work efficiently under 5 miles. So a journey of 1 mile emits around 574g CO2.

Those 14 car journeys of 1 mile therefore emit a total of 8036g (just over 8kg) of CO2.

That’s not a massive amount per person, but multiplied by approximately 40 million adults in the UK, that’s a potential saving of 320,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

That’s huge! And we can do that simply by leaving the car at home once a month and walking for 20 minutes instead.
